If you’ve researched ABA providers lately, you’ve probably noticed a trend: more and more companies are backed by private equity. Investors have been buying up small practices and rolling them into large, multi-state platforms, and it’s changing what families can expect from a provider.
At Unlocking The Spectrum, we’ve watched this shift from the outside. We’re still what we’ve always been since 2009: a family-owned company with no private equity ownership and no outside investors dictating our priorities. We think that matters.
The Trade-Offs of PE Ownership
Private equity firms aren’t inherently bad actors, but their incentives are different. Investors typically want returns within a set timeframe, which can mean pressure to scale quickly, standardize services, and maximize billable hours. That pressure can quietly shift decisions away from “what does this child need” toward “what does this metric need” — caseloads climb, sessions get standardized, and treatment plans start to look the same from child to child.
What Family Ownership Looks Like Instead
We don’t have investors to report to. We have families — the ones we serve, and the one that started this company. That means every decision, from how we structure a treatment plan to how we staff a case, gets made with one question in mind: what’s actually best for this child and this family?
It also means we can move at the pace of good clinical care instead of the pace of a growth plan. If a child needs more direct instruction hours, or a different pairing with their BCBA, or extra time before a school transition, we don’t need to run that through layers of corporate approval. Our BCBAs have the authority to make those calls, because clinical leadership — not a private equity board — sets the direction of this company.
BCBA Leadership, Not Corporate Leadership
One of the clearest ways this plays out is in who’s actually leading the organization. Our leadership team includes Board-Certified Behavior Analysts who have done the work themselves — writing programs, running sessions, sitting with families through hard conversations. They know what good ABA looks like because they’ve practiced it, not because it showed up in a slide deck from a private equity partner.
That clinical leadership shapes everything downstream: how we train our RBTs, how we build individualized programs, and how much say a BCBA has when something isn’t working for a client. It’s the difference between a company that delivers ABA and a company that is built around ABA.
What This Means for Your Family
Ownership structure isn’t something most families think to ask about when choosing a provider, but it can be an indicator of how your child’s care is approached. The focus should be on a truly individualized program, and a responsive approach that allows for your BCBA to spend more time with your family when needed.

It’s not the only thing that makes for good ABA therapy, but it’s the foundation that lets everything else — play-based programming, real family partnership, BCBAs who are genuinely accountable to your child — stay possible.
