Choosing a career in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) isn’t just about finding a job — it’s about discovering a passion for helping others grow, thrive, and succeed. Whether you’re just hearing about ABA for the first time or you’re considering your next professional step, a career in this field offers challenges, continuous learning, and deeply meaningful rewards.

Getting Started: Curiosity Comes First

The first step to building a career in ABA is simple but crucial: make sure you enjoy it. ABA is a science-driven, fast-paced field that asks a lot of its professionals — but the impact you can have makes every effort worth it. Before committing, take time to research the field. Read job descriptions carefully, ask to observe therapy during interviews, and talk to professionals already working in ABA.

Gaining entry-level experience is another great way to explore whether ABA is a good fit. Roles such as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) allow you to work directly with clients and begin building foundational knowledge while being supported by more experienced practitioners.

Key Qualities of a Successful ABA Professional

Success in ABA starts with a mindset geared toward growth. The science of behavior is constantly evolving, and each client presents unique challenges that require creativity, flexibility, and compassion. Some of the qualities that help people thrive in this field include:

  • A desire to help others
  • Enthusiasm and energy
  • Comfort with change and fast-paced environments
  • Dependability and teamwork
  • A passion for working with children
  • Initiative and curiosity

These traits become essential when facing challenges — from complex client needs to navigating insurance and funding systems. In those moments, leaning on a strong team and asking for support is not only encouraged but essential.

The Many Roles Within ABA

At a center like UTS, there are multiple career pathways, each offering opportunities to grow and specialize. These roles include:

  • Registered Behavior Technician (RBT): Implements individualized programs directly with clients.
  • Team Leader: A master’s-level student gaining experience under a BCBA while continuing some direct client work.
  • Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA): Provides supervision and support to RBTs, works under the guidance of a BCBA.
  • Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA): Oversees client treatment plans and provides supervision and training for team members.
  • Regional Director: Leads operations and provides clinical oversight for specific geographic areas.
  • Executive Team Member: As part of our executive team you work with a group of experienced BCBAs to provide support across all regions and staff levels.

Each of these roles contributes to a collaborative system where learning is ongoing, and support is never far away.

Choosing the Right ABA Company

When starting out, the right environment can make all the difference. Look for companies that go beyond the minimum in their supervision and training. Ask about how new staff are supported and what ongoing professional development opportunities exist. It’s also important to find a workplace culture that values employee well-being, celebrates longevity, and regularly shows appreciation to its team members.

At UTS, for example, new staff benefit from a layered support system, built-in mentorship, and the knowledge that asking questions is welcomed and encouraged.

Why We Love What We Do

ABA is more than data and behavior plans — it’s about human connection, hope, and transformation. Many of our professionals talk about the moment they “just knew” ABA was the right path. Whether it was hearing a child’s first word at four years old, or watching a family regain hope after feeling lost, the emotional rewards of this field run deep.

The Rewards of a Career in ABA

The impact you have as an ABA professional isn’t just on your clients — it’s also on yourself. You’ll grow alongside the people you serve. You’ll be challenged, supported, and inspired daily. And you’ll know that the work you do matters — every session, every breakthrough, every high five.

So if you’re looking for a career where you can make a real difference while continually learning and evolving, ABA might just be the place for you.
